Fun in the sun!

This is Lola, Mugsy's 'cousin', who is a boxer. They had a lot of fun playing by the pool a few weeks ago. Lola is about 9 months old in this picture and is skin and bones as many boxers are. I think it is interesting to see how Mugsy compares to her since he is filling out. He is little but a solid dog. He is due for the vet so I'll have to report his official weight - I'm guessing it is 40lbs or more.

Survivor Gabon Season 17 Premiere Tonight September 25 on CBS - Pinups For Pups

Wishing we had TIVO since we have a birthday party tonight, at least Mugsy will see it as he has a TV in his kennel/playroom. I even remembered to put peanut butter in his kong and toss it in the freezer so he has a nice treat for the show. It surely will be one of the last nice and warm days here in Minnesota.

Tootles!

Apple Cider Vinegar for Dogs

I saw this on the Old Boston Chat board today and had to share. It is nice to find remedies for minor issues the pets are having. I use it during cold and flu season as well as a tummy-tonic.

Here is the link:
http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/acvfordogs.html

I am actually excited to try it on the cat - she is a terribly fussy eater lately.

The Great Wabbit Chase

Rory and Mugsy playing in the backyard. He would chase the lure all day if we had time. It's a great way to wear him out. It does make it hard to rake or sweep now since he thinks all items with a handles are toys.

**update** Martha's Paw Paw goes over the Rainbow Bridge

Martha & Paw Paw (r.i.p.)

**Update** This actually happened in April. Sad either way...
I stopped home for lunch today to finish my 'noodle' medals for the closing ceremonies of my workplace Olympics today -(Go Team Italy!). The Martha Stewart Show was on and she was commenting on the loss of her famous Chow Chow, Paw Paw, who passed away on Saturday.

Our hearts go out to her and those who were close to Paw Paw. I was amazed by her ability to not burst into tears as she shared stories and pictures of her favorite companion over the last 14 years. My Amadeus(Iguana)was 14 years old when he passed away this past winter and it breaks your heart to not have them around. Martha has two french bulldogs to keep her company now, we think Martha has great taste in pets! Plus would guess that Martha allows her dogs on the counter!

Pet's Bill of Rights

Pet's Bill of Rights
Anonymous

  1. We have the right to be full members of your family. We thrive on social interaction, praise, and love.

  2. We have the right to stimulation. We need new games, new toys, new experiences, and new smells to be happy.

  3. We have the right to regular exercise. Without it, we could become hyper, sluggish...or fat.

  4. We have the right to have fun. We enjoy acting like clowns now and then; don't expect us to be predictable all the time.

  5. We have the right to quality health care. Please stay good friends with our vet.

  6. We have the right to a good diet. Like some people, we don't know what's best for us. We depend on you.

  7. We have the right not to be rejected because of your expectations that we be great show dogs, watchdogs, hunters, or baby-sitters.

  8. We have the right to receive proper training. Otherwise, our good relationship could be marred by confusion and strife - and we could become dangerous to ourselves and others.

  9. We have the right to guidance and correction based on understanding and compassion, rather than abuse.

  10. We have the right to live with dignity...and to die with dignity when the time comes.

My What Big Eyes You Have!

Post-Exercise Mugsy
July 2008

The dog days of summer are almost here. With temps in the 90's the dog are lazy and don't want to go to far away from their water dishes. We have enjoyed walks and even took Mugsy for his first boat ride. Not yet a swimmer, but he enjoyed the view and nap in the sun. He is physically starting to fill out and is now a fast, strong pro-bunny stick chaser! Video to come.

Summer!

'Mugsy' Roundheads Juji 13 months

Mugsy is growing up to be a fine little Olde Boston Bulldogge. His favorite things to do this summer are play with his big sis Azia in his BIG backyard. He spends alot of time entertaining the neighbors at the fence and even serenades the Carlsons at the back fence. The neighbor girls love, love, love him! So it is always a treat for him to get their attention.

He likes to go for walks and spends the first few steps jumping at his leash but eventually I get him to walk straight. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to handle both dogs by myself but they actually do quite well together with one walker.

So far in our bag of tricks we can sit, lay down, shake, jump through hula hoops, and play on his flirt pole. We are working on not jumping up and would love to get back into training but we have very hectic work schedules so it hasn't worked out again this summer. Maybe this fall when the boat and motorcycles (mom had one now too) have been put away and the summer parties have come to an end.

Mugsy does have a few pet peeves like me sitting at my computer and can try my patience as barks and whines and nudges my arms for attention. He tends to want to snuggle at night and manages to wait until we are asleep no matter how many times we push him off. Not sure what the resolution is as he is penned up all day I hate to do it all night.

Until next post,

Late Spring Photo

A few weeks to go until Mugsy turns One!

I am so pleased with Mugsy's personality. When he was younger he was so Grrrowly. But as he matured he turned into the sweetest, most loving little guy. He is simply amazing and loves people, dogs, and the cat! We could live without the snoring but it goes wit the singing and talking so as a whole...no regrets he is great.

I hope to get outside for some greener pictures soon!

Hello California!

Just wanted to say hello and let you know more people are visiting Mugsy's Blog in California than in Minnesota this month. Thanks for the love! We love comments, won't you leave us some?

Spring decided it was too cold here and it let winter back in maybe people are too depressed here to go online. Fun for a few romps in the snmud but then it's bath time... Which by the way makes Muggles smell wonderful, and he is so good about it really. It's like one of those febreeze commercials after. I just want to smell him, yum. Ha!

Mugsy is getting *BIG* this month - wow! Wish the scale worked but imagine a big cement block in bed with you and that is about the weight. Full-size little-big dog full of piss and vinegar. His muscle tone is amazing. He is born to run, pull, dance, love, kiss, and most importantly NAP! Or watch out for mr. whiney pants. Oh and he has taken up singing again, so we decided to just join in. A friend of mine has a red-nose pit that can say I LOVE YOU. I think we'll try to redirect this into words instead. It took her years to get it but she can say it!

Anyway we are getting involved with the GLBC - which is not the gay lesbian bisexual club, but the Great Lakes Bulldogge Club! Making some new friends and by the way we are the only OBB in the club so if anybody lives close and has an OBB we'd love to have some company. Fun stuff we will see if we like showing this August at the BRING YOUR BEST TO THE UPPER MIDWEST show in Hopkins, MN. We are getting great advice on the www.oldbostonchat.com board as far as getting ready. If you are interested in a pup like Mugsy - be sure to check out the board or the show.

We'll that is all for now...

IOEBA SHOW IN MINNESOTA!

HI ALL! I AM REPOSTING THIS MESSAGE FROM THE GREAT LAKES BULLDOGGE CLUB PRESIDENT... We are going to be having a show August 2nd and 3rd 2008. The show will be indoors and climate controlled, there will be camping and pet friendly hotels close to the show location, (maybe even onsite). I am looking to gauge how many people we can expect to bring dogs. We are also looking for sponsors to help make this event happen. This should be very exciting for many as there has never been a show in this area before and will allow many an opportunity to attend a conformation event for the 1st time. We will be doing a lot of local and regional advertising so we will have a lot of spectators as well. I am looking for some people to bring some dogs that can do an agility expo as well as training and obedience so let me know if you're interested in that also. Spread the word forward this email to EVERYONE! Please reply to this email or have other email me at coreycalvin@hotmail.com

Much more info to follow in the coming days and weeks!

Thank you
Corey Calvin

My Favorite Stuffie

Meet Bunny

This is Mugsy's favorite toy.

It was something that we had a the house when I was a kid, probably from the easter bunny quincidently. My Mom sent it over for the dogs to play with.

The unique thing about Bunny is Mugsy 'nookes' it to relax just about every night. He will do it with other stuffed toys but Bunny is his favorite. Most stuffies last a few days in our house before being torn to shreds, but not Bunny.

Bunny is not allowed outside. On his way inside sometimes Mugsy will pick up Bunny and run up and down the house with it. Sometimes Azia will take Bunny and run around and then Mugsy will chase her. Azia usually lets Mugsy have bunny back and for some reason you can see this makes her happy. (Smiles and Waggs)

I wash Bunny about once a week, but as you can imagine, Bunny is well loved. What will we do without Bunny when he is too fragile to be washed anymore?

Meet Mugsy's New Cousin!

Lady Lola of Bryn Mawr
Boxer - 8 weeks

Lola wasn't suppose to come home until this weekend but she was a Valentines Day surprise for Jessie from Dick. Yeah! I'll have to go over there to meet her this weekend. We've been sharing all of our expert advise but I think they are in for a surprise! Puppies are cute so you don't kill them for mischief. :)

Like today Mugsy surprised me with getting black gear grease all over my bedroom. Yippie! Not sure why we need to keep gear grease on our night stand where Mr Muggles likes to steal things and chew on them. Our house doubles as a garage and tool shed. Thanks Rory, I'll clean that up while you go on vacation this weekend. :) Actually it must have tasted awful since mugsy quickly moved on to something else it could have been a household disaster.

happy friday!

Puppy delivery! New service offered by Pet Babies on the Move

Not sure where this image came from but it has pets and babies.

I ran across this new service for puppy delivery, looked like a great option verses flying or driving yourself to pick up your new friend.

I haven't personally used them or know of anyone who has but I think it is a great option for people in the north since you can't fly your puppy in cold weather.

In fact my co-worker would have a little OBB right now if she could have arranged a flight.

If anybody tries it we'd love to know how it worked!

Happy Valentines Day!

A place to belong! Great Lakes Bulldogge Club - IOEBA

A new club has been started near Minnesota. Yeah!

It is called the Great Lakes Bulldogge Club - IOEBA.

We don't have a sponsor but we'd sure like to join. Mugsy will be super excited when I tell him.

Looks like they mostly have OEB - Olde English Bulldogges signed up. Maybe we can get cousin Haley (OEB) to sign up? Then we'd be able to go to shows together. :)

Thanks to the Old Boston Chat board for the cross post for the new club. Good luck to the organization! If they read this and need any graphic design help for their organization - I'm available to help make some stuff. :)

xoxo

p.s. Did I mention we are super excited about this?

Book Review: Dogs

My new book came today from Amazon.com and I love it! Anybody who loves old photography, especially of dogs, will love this book. Caroline Johnson collects amateur snapshots of dogs, this book is a collection of photos from the turn of the century up to the 50's. It also has a smattering of quotes and writings from William Wegman, the worlds best known dog photographer. Phaidon published the book; as an art student I quickly realized what great books they choose to publish, this is no exception. Some might review the faux cloth binding treatment as lesser quality but it is a great price for a 500+ page picture book.

It is especially fun for me to see all the old bulldogs! I think every other page has one. Oh! And all the old boston bulls pictures... They must have been quiet popular during the early days. There is even one picture that has writing on it. It says, "Can you find Pat? He's a Dandy little Toy Boston Bull and a female! Patsy is her right name." Lake Erie Summer 1928. That old pat joke from Saturday Night Live must be much older or it's an inside joke. The image is of a man cradling a Bt marked bulldog.

This will be a treasured addition to my growing collection of books on dogs. This also inspired me to finally finish that amazon store! So please check out our favorite book and movies! I will use the proceeds to help promote Olde Boston Bulldogges development by sponsoring trophies at ioeba.net shows, traveling to events or donating proceeds to other dog related causes.

Enjoy! Naomi & Mugsy

...nuff said (mugsy found the bunny)

Don't worry, I told him he was a good boy. He was excited; I cleaned it up (grimace). I may actually get sleep tonight since this has been keeping the dogs up at night - they must see bunnies from the window at night.

Weekend Forecast: High -1

Mugsy 7 Months Old
Thinking about peeing in the sub-zero temperatures.

I am dreading the weekend knowing we are in for a serious cold snap here in Minneapolis. With the average high temperature in the negatives and the wind chill about -10 to -20 we'll be spending all our time inside. It hurts to breath air that cold. The dogs will sit by the door and whine to go out but then not go out and sneak to the basement and pee. I don't blame them; it's just annoying and can lead to cabin fever for me. I think some critters have decided to hunker down in my garden shed in the backyard, so the dogs may decide to go out and hunt for a few seconds. If the bunnies are smart they will hide elsewhere.

I have lined up a few things to keep us busy. I will be making some homemade dog food I found on the Old Boston Chat Board called AMBROSIA. It is the formula used by the late Charles McCaughin’s (pronounced McAnn) at his “Lovin’ Hands Bostonetts” Kennel in Oklahoma. You might consider McCaughin as one of the founding fathers of the OBB bloodline. He breed his dogs back to the BT standard of 1935 when they were free of heath problems. He was not allowed to register his Bostons with the AKC. Most of his stock went to the Goodtimes Kennel in Ontario, Cananda when he passed. You can learn more about the breeding lines here; it sounds like they will be posting more pictures of McCauglin and the the history of his kennel later this year.

Then I also have materials lined up to make inexpensive no-sew dog toys that Mugsy loves and is friendly for his unique mouth. Has anyone ever noticed how large OBB mouths are? They are like Muppet's! Especially when they yawn. I will post instructions later.

Until next post,
Naomi & Mugsy

Texas Showdow | IOEBA Sanctioned Dog Show

That's Mugsy's Champion papa, Kodiak, in the middle picture. Mugsy's structure is very similar to Kodiak in that picture. I really wanted to participate but its too far to go at this time. It looks like there is one in May that is half the distance. I figured we drove down to pick him up from Kansas City at Roundhead Kennel so I can drive down there to show him too. He has really started to develop his adult form over the last few weeks and he is a natural at training. Hopefully I can work with an experienced handler in the meantime to work on our presence together.
